Aesculap, Inc. Announces Caiman® 5 Seal and Cut Technology Line Extension

Providing Surgeons Additional Length Solutions for Laparoscopic Surgery

Center Valley, PA (August 29, 2014) – Aesculap, Inc. is pleased to announce the expansion of its Caiman® 5 Seal and Cut Technology.  A tool for open surgery procedures, the Caiman 5mm vessel sealer device will be available in two additional lengths to accommodate a variety of patient sizes for laparoscopic surgery.

Caiman’s novel hinged-jaw design and extended jaw offers unparalleled benefits for a broad range of procedures in the areas of gynecology, general and urologic surgery. Caiman was developed to address the challenges that come with traditional vessel sealing devices.  For a variety of tissue thicknesses, the proprietary hinged jaw provides uniform pressure distribution across the surface of the tissue, resulting in a clean and consistent seal.

“Surgeons were impressed with the initial product launch of the Caiman 5 and its high quality seal, 26.5mm jaw and the ability to use the device as a tool for grasping and blunt dissection, all of which supports a more efficient procedure,” said Chuck DiNardo, President of Aesculap, Inc.  “With the launch of the 24cm and 44cm lengths, surgeons can continue to utilize the same features for open surgery and additional laparoscopic procedures.”

“Caiman has become my primary tool for vessel sealing,” stated Dr. Robert Pollard of MetroHealth Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.  “I trust its reliability and ease of use.”

Caiman Seal and Cut Technology consists of dedicated bipolar electrosurgical instruments intended for use in general surgery and gynecologic surgical procedures where ligation and division of vessels is desired. The instruments create a seal by the application of bipolar electrosurgical RF energy (coagulation) to vascular structure (vessels) interposed between the jaws of the device. A cutting blade is actuated for the division of tissue.

Caiman 5 (24cm, 36cm and 44cm) are indicated for laparoscopic procedures and open procedures.  The indications for use include general surgical procedures (including urologic, vascular, thoracic, and thoracoscopic) and gynecological procedures where ligation and division of vessels is performed. These procedures include: vaginal hysterectomies, Nissen fundoplication, colectomy, adhesiolysis, bowel resection, and oophorectomy etc., or any procedure where vessel ligation (seal and cut), tissue grasping, and dissection is performed. The devices can be used on vessels up to and including 7mm and bundles as large as will fit in the jaws of the instrument.
Caiman 12mm vessel sealers are also available in an articulating format for laparoscopic and open procedures, in 44cm and 24cm lengths. Visit  to view videos and learn more.
